Septic Systems

Installing a septic system in Ontario begins with a site assessment and the preparation of a septic system design that complies with Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code. The assessment considers factors such as soil conditions, groundwater, lot characteristics, setbacks from wells and watercourses, and the expected daily sewage flow. For most residential systems, which have a design capacity of up to 10,000 litres per day, a permit is required before construction begins. Depending on the municipality, the permit and inspection process may be administered by the local building department, health unit, or conservation authority. The system should be designed and installed by qualified professionals who meet Ontario’s requirements for on-site sewage systems.

Once the design is approved and the permit issued, installation generally involves excavating the septic tank and leaching bed area, installing the septic tank and associated piping, and constructing the approved soil absorption or treatment area. The tank receives and settles household wastewater, while the leaching bed or other approved treatment system distributes effluent into the soil for further treatment. Construction must follow the approved plans and Ontario’s prescribed standards, including required separation distances and protection of groundwater and surface water. An inspection is required during construction before the system is covered, and the completed system must be approved by the applicable authority. Systemisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.

Site Assessment and Design

The installation process begins with an assessment of the property, including soil conditions, groundwater levels, lot size, and required setback distances. A septic system is then designed to meet the needs of the property and comply with applicable Ontario Building Code requirements

Permit Approval

Before construction begins, the required permits must be obtained from the authority having jurisdiction, such as the local municipality or health unit. The proposed septic system design is reviewed to ensure it meets applicable regulations and site requirements.

Excavation and Installation

Once approved, the septic tank location and leaching bed area are excavated according to the approved design. The septic tank, distribution piping, and leaching bed or other approved treatment components are then installed and connected to the building’s plumbing system.

Inspection and Final Approval

The system is inspected during or after installation before it is covered and put into service. Once the installation has passed inspection and received final approval, the excavation can be backfilled and the septic system can be placed into operation.
